Zero-Click Crisis: 26,619 Wasted Impressions
Google showed our pages 50,224 times in the last 28 days. Users clicked 498 times. That is a 0.99% click-through rate across 1,000 tracked pages.
But the aggregate number hides something worse. 744 of those 1,000 pages received zero clicks. Not one. Google served them 26,619 times and nobody clicked. That is 53% of all impressions producing nothing.
This is a data-driven analysis of what went wrong, which pages escaped the zero-click trap, and what separates content that earns clicks from content that gets ignored.
The Scale of the Problem
We pulled 28 days of Google Search Console data covering the top 1,000 pages by impression count. The breakdown:

Three out of four pages produced nothing. More than half of all Google impressions were wasted on pages nobody wanted to visit.
The Impression Trap: High Visibility, Zero Return
The intuitive explanation is that zero-click pages simply are not being seen. They rank on page five, get a handful of impressions from obscure queries, and disappear. That explanation is wrong.
Here is the impression distribution for the 744 zero-click pages:

702 of the 744 zero-click pages had 10 or more impressions. These are not invisible pages. Google is showing them repeatedly. Users see the title and description in search results and choose not to click.
The 46 zero-click pages with 100+ impressions alone account for 7,975 wasted impressions. One page – the /all-articles index – received 934 impressions with zero clicks, the single highest-impression zero-click page in the dataset.
Position Analysis: Visible But Ignored
If these pages ranked on page three or four of Google, zero clicks would be expected. Most users never scroll past page one. But the position data tells a different story.

402 zero-click pages sit on page one of Google (positions 1-10), accounting for 13,626 wasted impressions. These pages rank well. Users see them. And users scroll right past them.
The average position for zero-click pages is 13.02. The average position for pages that earn clicks is 10.27. That is a difference of less than three positions. Position alone does not explain the gap.
The 20 Highest-Impression Zero-Click Pages
These pages get the most visibility with the least return. Each one represents a title and meta description that Google displayed dozens or hundreds of times without earning a single click.

Several patterns emerge from this list. Generic index pages (all-articles) get impressions but offer no compelling reason to click. Chrome extension pages rank well but compete with established incumbents. Niche technical guides (xata-serverless-database, tree-sitter-node-types) match long-tail queries that users may resolve from the snippet alone.
Seven of the top 20 are Chrome extension or browser comparison pages – content that competes against established brands with far higher domain authority. Five are Claude Code workflow guides targeting extremely narrow technical niches.
What the Top-Performing Pages Do Differently
For contrast, here are the 10 pages with the highest click-through rates (minimum 10 impressions):

The high-CTR pages share a critical trait: specificity of use case. These are not broad overviews. “Claude md example for Laravel” targets a developer who uses Laravel and wants a concrete .claude.md file. “Arxiv paper implementation guide” targets a researcher who wants to turn a paper into code. “CIS benchmark hardening script automation” targets a security engineer with a specific compliance task.
Meanwhile, the pages with the most total clicks tell another story:

The highest-click page earns 46 clicks from 2,198 impressions – a 2.09% CTR that is double the site average. It targets a specific, painful error message. Four of the top five pages by total clicks address specific error conditions. Error content converts.
Content Category Analysis
Grouping pages by URL pattern reveals which content categories earn clicks and which do not:

Error and fix pages convert at 38%. More than one in three error-focused pages earns at least one click. Chrome extension pages convert at 7.4% – roughly one in thirteen. The site has 189 zero-click Chrome extension pages compared to only 15 that get any clicks at all.
This is the clearest signal in the data. Content that addresses a specific error message or failure condition earns clicks because the user has an active problem. Content that reviews Chrome extensions or compares browsers competes against established authority sites and loses.
The Median Tells the Real Story
Average impressions for zero-click pages: 35.8. Average impressions for clicking pages: 92.2. That makes it look like clicking pages simply get more exposure.
But the median tells a different story. Median impressions for zero-click pages: 20. Median impressions for clicking pages: 24. The typical page in both groups gets similar exposure. The difference is not visibility – it is relevance.
A page with 20 impressions and 1 click has a 5% CTR. A page with 20 impressions and 0 clicks has a 0% CTR. Both got the same opportunity. One converted because it matched what the user actually needed.
Five Lessons From 26,619 Wasted Impressions
1. Position is necessary but not sufficient. 402 zero-click pages sit on page one. Ranking well does not guarantee clicks. The title and description must answer the implicit question: “Will this page solve my specific problem?”
2. Error content has the highest conversion rate. Pages targeting specific error messages convert at 5-8x the rate of general guides. Users searching for error strings have urgent, specific needs and are willing to click through to solutions.
3. Chrome extension content is a trap. With 189 zero-click pages and only 15 earning clicks (7.4% conversion), browser extension content produces massive waste. These pages rank but cannot compete with established extension directories and review sites.
4. Specificity drives CTR more than position. The highest-CTR pages target narrow use cases (Laravel + Claude, FPGA development, CIS benchmarks). They may get fewer impressions, but a far higher percentage of those impressions convert to clicks.
5. Snippet answering kills clicks. Many zero-click pages with good positions likely have their answer visible in the search snippet itself. When Google can display the answer without requiring a click, high rankings produce impressions but not traffic. This is particularly true for “how-to” and “what-is” queries where the answer fits in two sentences.
What This Means for AI Content Strategy
The zero-click crisis is not unique to this site. It reflects a structural shift in how Google handles informational content, particularly in the AI tools space where Google’s own AI overviews frequently answer queries directly in the SERP.
The data suggests a clear prioritization framework: invest in error-resolution content targeting specific error messages, reduce investment in generic tool comparison and browser extension content, and optimize titles and descriptions to promise specific, actionable value that cannot be extracted from a snippet alone.
The 26,619 wasted impressions are not a failure of SEO. The pages rank. The failure is in content-market fit – producing content that Google will show but users will not click.
