Cline (formerly Claude Dev) is an open-source VS Code extension that turns any LLM into an agentic coding assistant. It runs inside your editor, reads your files, executes terminal commands, and iterates on code autonomously. In 2026 it remains one of the most capable open-source options in the agentic coding space.

This review covers what Cline actually does well, where it falls short, how its pricing model works in practice, and how it compares to Claude Code for developers choosing between the two.

What Cline Is

Cline is a VS Code extension. It is not a standalone CLI, a web app, or a hosted service. You install it, connect it to an LLM provider via API key (Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, local models via Ollama, or OpenRouter), and then interact with it through the VS Code sidebar.

The key design choice: Cline makes all its operations visible and requires user approval for each tool use by default. Before it writes a file, deletes something, or runs a terminal command, it shows you exactly what it intends to do. You approve or reject. This is called “act mode” with manual approvals, and it is the default.

Cline also supports an “auto-approve” mode where it runs uninterrupted. Most experienced users run auto-approve for routine tasks and switch back to manual approval when the task is risky.

Core Features

File system operations. Cline can read, write, create, and delete files across your project. It understands directory structure and navigates large codebases by reading relevant files before acting.

Terminal execution. Cline runs shell commands and reads their output. It uses terminal output to verify its own work. running tests after writing code, checking build output after modifying configuration files.

Browser automation. Cline includes a headless browser tool that can navigate to URLs, take screenshots, and read page content. This is useful for verifying frontend changes and testing deployed endpoints.

Multi-model support. Cline works with any provider that offers an OpenAI-compatible API. You can run it against Claude 3.5 Sonnet, GPT-4o, Gemini 1.5 Pro, or a local Llama model. The model quality directly determines the task success rate.

Custom instructions. Cline supports a .clinerules file at the project root. similar in concept to Claude’s CLAUDE.md. You define project conventions, coding standards, and behavioral constraints here.

MCP support. Cline integrates with the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which means it can use MCP servers to access external tools and data sources.

What Cline Does Well

Editor integration. The VS Code integration is mature. Cline shows diffs inline before applying changes, lets you review each file edit in a familiar interface, and preserves your editor state throughout a session.

Transparency. The step-by-step approval model makes Cline’s reasoning visible. You can see exactly which files it read, what commands it ran, and why it made each decision. For developers who want to understand and audit what their AI assistant is doing, this is a genuine advantage.

Model flexibility. Being model-agnostic is practically useful. You can use cheaper models for simple refactors and switch to Claude Opus for complex architecture work within the same tool. OpenRouter integration makes this switching low-friction.

Cost control. Because you use your own API keys, you have direct visibility into token usage. Cline shows token counts and estimated costs per task. There is no subscription markup. you pay API rates directly.

Community and extensibility. The open-source codebase is actively maintained. The MCP ecosystem is broad. Community-contributed MCP servers add capabilities like database access, Jira integration, and deployment tooling.

Limitations

No built-in skills system. Cline does not have a formalized mechanism for creating reusable, invocable skills like Claude Code’s /skill-name workflow. You can approximate this with .clinerules and custom prompts, but there is no equivalent to Claude Code’s skill library pattern.

Context window management is manual. In long sessions, Cline’s context fills up. It does not automatically summarize or compress prior context. You need to start new tasks explicitly to keep sessions performant. This is a workflow overhead that experienced users manage but beginners find frustrating.

No team sharing. There is no built-in mechanism for sharing configurations, instructions, or skill equivalents across a team. Each developer manages their own setup.

VS Code only. Cline requires VS Code or a compatible fork (Cursor, Windsurf). If your workflow involves Neovim, JetBrains IDEs, or terminal-only development, Cline is not an option.

Auto-approve requires judgment. In auto-approve mode, Cline will execute terminal commands without confirmation. On a few well-documented occasions, users have had Cline run destructive commands it inferred were necessary. The approval mode exists for a reason. using auto-approve requires understanding what you are running.

Pricing Model

Cline itself is free and open-source. You pay only for the API calls you make. With Claude 3.5 Sonnet at standard API rates, a typical multi-file refactor task costs $0.05 to $0.30 depending on context size. A complex feature implementation with multiple iterations costs $0.50 to $2.00.

For heavy users, monthly API costs typically fall in the $30 to $150 range depending on task volume and model choice. Using faster, cheaper models (Haiku, Flash) for simple tasks and reserving Sonnet/Opus for complex ones is the standard cost optimization strategy.

Who Should Use Cline

Cline is a strong choice when:

  • You prefer VS Code and want AI assistance integrated into your editor workflow
  • You want model flexibility and cost transparency
  • You want the approval-first workflow where every action is visible before it executes
  • You work independently and do not need to share configurations across a team
  • You want open-source tooling you can inspect, fork, and modify

Who Should Use Claude Code

Claude Code is a stronger choice when:

  • You work in the terminal and want agent assistance without switching to VS Code
  • You need a team-wide skills library. shared .md skill files that every developer invokes the same way
  • You want automatic context management in long sessions without manual task resets
  • You work across multiple editors and OS environments
  • You are building multi-agent pipelines that use Claude Code’s SDK directly

Honest Assessment

Cline is a genuinely capable tool. The transparency model is the right call for a tool that modifies your file system and runs terminal commands. The open-source architecture means you can inspect exactly what it is doing under the hood, and the community ecosystem is active.

The main practical limitation for team use is the absence of a shared skills and configuration system. Claude Code’s skills pattern. where a team shares a .claude/skills/ directory in version control and every developer invokes the same commands. has no direct equivalent in Cline. For solo developers this is not an issue. For teams trying to standardize AI-assisted workflows, it is a real gap.

The model flexibility is a genuine advantage. The ability to route different task types to different models within the same workflow is useful for cost management, and Cline’s cost tracking is more granular than any subscription-based tool.

Both tools are mature enough to use in production. The choice between them is largely a question of working style: editor-integrated with approval transparency (Cline) versus terminal-native with a team skills system (Claude Code).
