The Error
When you try to open an existing conversation on claude.ai, you see:
Can't open this chat
Something went wrong while loading this conversation. Please try again or start a new chat.
Or a variant:
This conversation could not be loaded.
The conversation appears in your sidebar, but clicking it fails to load the messages. This error indicates that the conversation data is either corrupted, inaccessible, or blocked by a client-side issue.
Cause 1: Browser Cache or Cookies Corrupted
The most frequent cause. Claude.ai stores session data and conversation metadata in your browser. If this data becomes inconsistent, the app cannot reconstruct the conversation.
Fix:
Chrome:
1. Open chrome://settings/content/all
2. Search for "claude.ai"
3. Click the trash icon to delete all site data
4. Close and reopen Chrome
5. Log in to claude.ai again
Shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+Delete (Cmd+Shift+Delete on Mac)
→ Select "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files"
→ Time range: "All time"
→ Click "Delete data"
After clearing, you will need to log in again. Your conversations are stored server-side, so they will reappear once you authenticate.
Cause 2: Conversation Exceeded Context Limit
Claude conversations have a maximum context window. When a conversation accumulates enough messages that the total token count exceeds the model’s limit, the server may fail to load it.
Symptoms:
- The chat loaded fine yesterday but fails today
- You were sending very long messages or pasting large code blocks
- The conversation had 50+ exchanges
Fix:
There is no way to truncate an existing conversation. Start a new chat and copy over any critical context you need. To prevent this in the future:
- Start new conversations for new topics instead of continuing one indefinitely
- Use the “Copy” button to save important responses before a conversation gets too long
- Avoid pasting entire files (thousands of lines) into the chat
Cause 3: Account Session Expired
Your authentication session has expired but the browser still has a stale session cookie. The app tries to load the conversation with invalid credentials and fails.
Fix:
1. Click your profile icon (bottom-left on claude.ai)
2. Click "Log out"
3. Close the browser tab entirely
4. Open a new tab and go to claude.ai
5. Log in with your credentials
If you cannot access the logout button because the app is stuck:
1. Open your browser's developer tools (F12)
2. Go to Application → Storage → Cookies
3. Delete all cookies for claude.ai
4. Refresh the page
Cause 4: Browser Extension Interference
Extensions that modify page content, block scripts, or inject CSS can break claude.ai’s JavaScript application. Common offenders include ad blockers, privacy extensions, script blockers, and custom CSS injectors.
Diagnose:
1. Open an Incognito/Private window (Ctrl+Shift+N / Cmd+Shift+N)
- Extensions are disabled in Incognito by default
2. Go to claude.ai and log in
3. Try opening the problematic chat
If the chat loads in Incognito, an extension is the cause.
Fix:
Disable extensions one by one to identify the culprit:
Chrome: chrome://extensions/
Firefox: about:addons
Safari: Safari → Settings → Extensions
Edge: edge://extensions/
Common problematic extensions:
- uBlock Origin – can block Anthropic’s API endpoints. Add
claude.aito the whitelist. - Grammarly – injects into text areas and can interfere with Claude’s message rendering.
- Dark Reader – CSS injection can break the conversation loader.
- Privacy Badger – may block necessary tracking cookies for session management.
Cause 5: Claude.ai Service Disruption
The conversation data may be temporarily inaccessible due to a server-side issue.
Diagnose:
# Check Anthropic's status page
curl -s https://status.anthropic.com/api/v2/status.json | python3 -c "
import sys, json
data = json.load(sys.stdin)
print('Status:', data['status']['description'])
print('Indicator:', data['status']['indicator'])
"
Or visit status.anthropic.com directly.
Fix:
If there is an active incident, wait for resolution. Anthropic’s engineering team will restore access once the issue is resolved. Your conversation data is not lost during outages – it is stored server-side and will be accessible once the service recovers.
Cause 6: Shared Chat Link Expired
If you are trying to open a conversation through a shared link (not your own chat), the link may have expired or been revoked by the person who shared it.
Symptoms:
- The URL contains
/share/in the path - You see “This shared conversation is no longer available”
- The link worked previously but now fails
Fix:
Ask the person who shared the link to generate a new one. Shared links can be revoked by the creator at any time. There is no way to restore access to a revoked shared link.
If you shared the link yourself:
- Go to the original conversation in your sidebar
- Click the share icon
- Generate a new shareable link
Cause 7: Organization Policy Restrictions
If you use Claude through a Team or Enterprise plan, your organization administrator may have configured policies that restrict access to certain conversations.
Symptoms:
- Only some conversations fail to load
- Conversations created before a policy change still appear but cannot be opened
- Other team members can open their own conversations without issues
Fix:
Contact your organization’s Claude administrator. They can check:
- Whether conversation retention policies have been applied
- Whether your user role has been modified
- Whether the organization’s data processing agreement has changed, triggering conversation purges
Browser-Specific Fixes
Chrome
1. Disable hardware acceleration (causes rendering issues):
chrome://settings/system → Turn off "Use hardware acceleration"

Search for "claude.ai" → Remove
2. Disable Enhanced Tracking Protection for claude.ai:
Click the shield icon in the URL bar → Turn off for this site
3. Clear the DNS cache (if DNS issues cause partial loads):
about:networking#dns → Clear DNS Cache
Safari
1. Clear website data:
Safari → Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
Search for "claude" → Remove
2. Disable content blockers for claude.ai:
Right-click the URL bar → Settings for This Website
Uncheck "Enable content blockers"
3. Reset Safari entirely (nuclear option):
Safari → Settings → Privacy → Remove All Website Data
Edge
1. Clear browsing data:
edge://settings/privacy → Choose what to clear
Select cookies and cached files → Clear now
2. Disable extensions:
edge://extensions/ → Toggle off all extensions, test, re-enable one by one
How to Export and Save Chats
Prevent data loss by exporting conversations before they become inaccessible.
Manual export:
- Open the conversation while it still loads
- Select all text (Ctrl+A / Cmd+A)
- Copy and paste into a local file
Using the API for backup (if you have API access):
Claude.ai conversations are not accessible through the API. They are separate systems. However, if you are building with the API and want conversation backups:
import json
from pathlib import Path
from datetime import datetime
def save_conversation(messages, filename=None):
if not filename:
filename = f"claude-chat-{datetime.now().strftime('%Y%m%d-%H%M%S')}.json"
Path(filename).write_text(json.dumps(messages, indent=2))
print(f"Saved to {filename}")
Browser developer tools export:
- Open Developer Tools (F12)
- Go to the Network tab
- Reload the conversation page
- Look for API responses containing conversation data
- Right-click the response and select “Copy response”

Mobile App Specific Issues
The Claude iOS and Android apps can show the same error with additional causes:
App cache full:
- iOS: Settings > Claude > Clear Cache
- Android: Settings > Apps > Claude > Storage > Clear Cache
Outdated app version:
- Update to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play
- Older app versions may not support newer conversation formats
Network connectivity:
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular to rule out network issues
- Disable any VPN running on the device
- Check that claude.ai is not blocked by your network’s content filter
Low storage:
- If your device is low on storage, the app cannot cache conversation data
- Free up at least 500 MB of storage and retry
FAQ
Are my conversations permanently lost?
Almost certainly not. Conversations are stored on Anthropic’s servers, not in your browser. If you can clear your browser cache and log in again, your conversations will reappear. The only exception is if Anthropic has purged the data due to a retention policy or if you explicitly deleted the conversation.
Why does only one specific chat fail to load?
That conversation likely hit a size or complexity limit that prevents the server from serializing it for delivery. Extremely long conversations with many code blocks or image attachments are the most common triggers. Other conversations load fine because they are smaller.
Can I recover a chat that has been failing for days?
Try on a different browser or device first. If it still fails, the conversation data may be in a state that the client application cannot render. Contact Anthropic support through the help menu on claude.ai and provide the conversation URL.
Will starting a new chat delete the broken one?
No. Starting a new conversation does not affect existing ones. The broken conversation will remain in your sidebar. It may become loadable again after a server-side fix.
I cleared all data and the chat still fails to load. Now what?
If the conversation fails across multiple browsers, multiple devices, and after clearing all local data, the issue is server-side. Check status.anthropic.com for incidents. If no incident is listed, contact Anthropic support.
Does this error affect Claude Code or the API?
No. The “can’t open this chat” error is specific to the claude.ai web and mobile applications. Claude Code and the API use different infrastructure. If you are experiencing API errors, those have different causes and solutions.
Can I prevent this error from happening in the future?
Yes. Start new conversations for new topics instead of continuing one indefinitely. Avoid pasting very large code blocks or entire files into the chat. Use the Projects feature to attach files without consuming message context.
Does using a VPN cause this error?
A VPN itself does not cause the error, but switching VPN servers mid-session can invalidate your session cookie, which triggers the expired session variant. Keep your VPN connection stable during active conversations.
Will Anthropic support help me recover a broken chat?
Contact Anthropic support through the help menu on claude.ai and provide the conversation URL. They may be able to identify the server-side issue, though recovery of individual conversations is not guaranteed.
Does this error mean my data was lost?
Almost certainly not. Conversations are stored on Anthropic’s servers. The error is a client-side loading issue in most cases. Clearing your browser cache and logging in again usually restores access to all your conversations.
